How to interpret a birth chart

In astrology, the Sun is often read for core drives, the Moon for emotional needs, and the Ascendant for approach and first impressions. Together they are commonly called the Big Three. The other planets and houses add more context to a chart.

A personal birth chart reading considers the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant alongside each planet's sign and house. Astrology often uses the Sun for core drives, the Moon for emotional needs, and the Ascendant for approach and first impressions. Houses connect these themes with areas of life. This is a symbolic reading, not a scientific personality measure or a reliable prediction.

What does a natal chart show?

A birth chart, also called a natal chart, maps the sky for a particular birth date, time, and place. Unlike a general Sun-sign horoscope, it brings the Moon and other planetary placements into one personal snapshot; with a birth time, it can also show the Ascendant and houses. This calculator uses the tropical zodiac and Whole Sign houses. Astrology is a symbolic tradition, not a scientific personality measure or prediction.

The Big Three: Sun, Moon, and rising sign

The Sun sign is used to discuss core motivations, the Moon sign emotional needs, and the rising sign the approach someone takes to new situations. The rising sign is the zodiac sign on the eastern horizon at birth. These are symbolic interpretations, not fixed personality labels.

What do planetary placements represent?

Astrologers use a planet's sign as one way to describe how that planet's themes may be expressed in a chart.

Sun
identity and core motivations
Moon
emotions and inner security
Mercury
thinking and communication
Venus
affection, taste, and values
Mars
drive, energy, and action
Jupiter
growth, learning, and opportunity
Saturn
responsibility, limits, and long-term effort
Uranus
change, originality, and independence
Neptune
imagination, ideals, and intuition
Pluto
deep change, power, and renewal

What do conjunctions, squares, and trines mean in a birth chart?

Aspects are angular relationships between planets. Astrology interprets them in context: the planets involved matter, so an aspect is not automatically good or bad on its own.

0° Conjunction
Planetary themes combine or intensify.
60° Sextile
Often associated with cooperation or an opening to develop.
90° Square
May be read as friction that calls for adjustment.
120° Trine
Often read as an easier or more flowing connection.
180° Opposition
Can point to contrasting themes that need balance.
COMMON QUESTIONS

Birth chart questions, answered

What is a birth chart, and what information do I need?

A birth chart or natal chart is an astrology map of the sky at a particular moment. You need a birth date and place. The time is especially important for the Ascendant and house placements.

How do I read a birth chart, and where should I start?

Start with the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant. Then look at the planets by sign and house and the aspects connecting them. Birth time matters for the Ascendant and houses. Read placements together, since one position does not explain the whole chart.

Can I get a birth chart without knowing my birth time?

You can still see many planetary sign placements, but the Ascendant and houses need a birth time. The Moon can move into a different sign during the day, so that placement may also need to be treated as uncertain.

What do the 12 houses mean in a natal chart?

Astrology uses houses to group chart themes into areas of life. The seventh house is commonly linked with committed one-to-one relationships and business partnerships; the first with self-presentation, and the tenth with career or public life. Exact placements depend on the house system.

What does the 7th house mean in a birth chart?

The seventh house is often associated with committed one-to-one bonds, including marriage, romantic relationships, and business partnerships. Its sign and planets are read within the full chart; it does not identify a future partner or determine a relationship outcome.

What does the Midheaven (MC) mean in a birth chart?

The Midheaven, or MC, marks the highest point in the sky at the time of birth. In astrology it is often read in connection with career aims, public life, and reputation. It does not determine a particular job or guarantee success.

Can a birth chart predict the future?

A birth chart is a symbolic reading of the sky at your birth, not a reliable way to establish future events. It can be used as a reflective framework, but it cannot guarantee what will happen or when.

Why can birth chart calculators show different placements?

A calculator may use a different time zone, daylight-saving setting, tropical or sidereal zodiac, birthplace coordinate, or house system. This page uses the tropical zodiac and Whole Sign houses.
